One of the most memorable and meaningful traditions I witnessed while my four older children attended Tantasqua Regional High School in Sturbridge was the Senior Stroll. Each year, graduating seniors were bused to their respective elementary schools—five in total across the district—where they proudly wore their caps and gowns and walked the halls that marked the beginning of their educational journeys.

This event was more than just a celebration; it was a bridge between the past and the future. For the graduates, it was an opportunity to reflect on how far they had come, to thank the teachers who first nurtured their love of learning, and to share in the collective pride of the school community. For the younger students, the experience was equally impactful—serving as a tangible and inspiring reminder of what lies ahead if they continue to work hard and stay dedicated to their goals.

At the most recent Pomfret Board of Education meeting, it was mentioned that Pomfret seniors once visited Pomfret Community School. While I am unsure whether this visit included caps and gowns or carried a formal title, it seems that this tradition is no longer being practiced. I believe reinstating such an event would be a wonderful way to celebrate our graduating seniors while also fostering school pride and unity across all grade levels.

The Senior Stroll is a simple yet profoundly meaningful experience that strengthens the connection between our elementary and secondary schools. It reminds us that education is a journey that begins with a single classroom and continues through years of growth, perseverance, and community support.

I would be happy to assist in organizing and coordinating the reintroduction of this event at Pomfret Community School. With collaboration from the high school and the elementary school, this could easily become a cherished annual tradition—one that honors our students’ accomplishments and reinforces the values that make Pomfret’s educational community so special.

What do you think, Pomfret? Should we initiate a Senior Stroll at PCS?
