With multiple hot topics in Pomfret going to full-day referendums this year, including the budget and now the solar proposal, I wanted to share some information about who can get an absentee ballot and how.
Who can get an absentee ballot? Thanks to the law change in May 2026, anyone can get an absentee ballot. The new law provides that all eligible Connecticut voters may cast their ballots using absentee ballots; you no longer have to certify a specific reason on the application form.
Who is considered a qualified voter for referendums in Pomfret? Any registered Pomfret voter and/or anyone on the last completed grand list owning real estate, motor vehicle, and/or personal property assessed at $1,000 or more.
How do I get an absentee ballot? In the town of Pomfret, you would request your ballot from the Town Hall. Because the solar proposal referendum had less than 3 weeks' notice, there's actually a different form to use than the one currently posted on our town's website.
HERE IS THE CONNECTICUT FORM TO REQUEST AN ABSENTEE BALLOT FOR A REFERENDUM WITH LESS THAN 3 WEEKS' NOTICE:
This is what's currently on the Town's Website:

It may still be acceptable, but I would verify with the Town Clerk first, or just use the appropriate form for the situation at hand.
Just remember, you do not need a reason to vote by absentee ballot, and every eligible voter in Pomfret has the right to get one. If you know anyone who would like to vote on the solar array proposal, let them know about this option available to them.
The full day referendum is scheduled for July 2, 2026, at Pomfret Community School from 6 AM to 8 PM, and we were told last night that absentee ballots will be available to pick up during regular business hours on Tuesday and Wednesday at the Town Hall.
