“Biggest of Its Kind”… or Something Else? What Really Happened at Pomfret’s Planning & Zoning Hearing

This past week, residents packed into the Pomfret Planning & Zoning meeting to speak about the proposed relocation of the NECCOG Regional Animal Control Facility.

But before we even get to the meeting itself, there’s something that can’t be ignored.

On WINY Radio, Jim Rivers described this project as “the biggest of its kind in the state,” with the capacity to handle livestock—including horses, cows, pigs, and goats.

Yet during the public hearing, that same project was presented in a very different light, and he claimed he "misspoke".

👉 So which is it?

The Questions That Didn’t Get Answered

Despite hours of discussion, some of the most important questions remained unanswered:

  • What other locations were seriously considered?

  • Why Pomfret?

  • What is the actual benefit to Pomfret residents?

These aren’t minor details—they’re the foundation of responsible decision-making.

Pomfret Was the Most Central”… Another Claim That Doesn’t Hold Up

One of the key justifications presented was that Pomfret was selected because it is the “most central location” for the towns served by NECCOG.

But that statement doesn’t hold up under even basic scrutiny. Here is what I found when I searched using the centrality method and the driving methods:

Listen for Yourself. Then Decide.

At the end of the day, you don’t have to take my word for any of this.

🎧 Listen to the audio. Watch the full video.

Hear the questions residents asked.

Listen to the answers—or lack of them.

Pay attention to what was said… and what wasn’t.

Because when you do, a few things become hard to ignore:

  • A project described publicly one way… and downplayed in the hearing

  • Basic, reasonable questions left unanswered

  • A decision was pushed forward without fully addressing community concerns

And perhaps most troubling—

👉 A vote recorded as “unanimous”… when one member didn’t even vote.

That alone should make every resident stop and ask: How closely is this process really being followed?

Make Up Your Own Mind

You deserve to see it.

You deserve to hear it.

And most importantly, you deserve to decide for yourself.

🎥 Watch the video. Listen to the audio. Then ask yourself if this is the process Pomfret should accept.
